The creation of a new team
The CHINA TEAM is a professional structure entirely dedicated to driving an America’s Cup project including diverse aspects: technical, scientific, sporting, logistics but equally promotion, communication, licensing, hospitality…
The project is led by the LE DEFI organization, already responsible for French America’s Cup programs in 2000 and 2003. The organization is funded by their Chinese partners. This combined organizational structure brings forth the first America’s Cup participation by China.
The launching of the CHINA TEAM program is directly supported by the knowledge of LE DEFI: above all, by the active crew having raced two boats for the 2003 campaign but also the logistical elements onshore (workshops, varied support) and on the water (support boats) These strengths meant quickly getting operations underway under the Chinese flag in May 2005, a few weeks after the birth of the new team, and engage CHN69 (FRA69 in the 2003 America's Cup) in Louis Vuitton Act 4 (Valencia) in June 2005, with Chinese sailors on board for the first time. LE DEFI brings human knowledge and scientific data as the result of research programs of the last two events which allow designing the teams’ new boat CHN95, built in China.
Thanks to quick support from new sponsors, the CHINA TEAM could develop a coherent program over three years (2005/2007). TAG HEUR from May 2005 then LLADRO in June 2005 and CHIVAS in August 2006. A certain number of partners and providers have continued along with LE DEFI from their previous campaigns, notably NEOCLES, or since 2004, RENAULT ESPAGNE. Other important partners have joined the CHINA TEAM: LES ECHOS and LESECHOS.FR in December 2005, COSCO in July 2006, K-SWISS in September 2006, EUROSPORT in December 2006.
The team also benefits from active support from M. Frank PONG, who has allowed and facilitated technical sporting operations in China.
The ensemble of financial supporting resources integrated into the team is in the order of 14M€.
Even if its operational budget is weakest of the teams entered into the 32nd America’s Cup, CHINA TEAM is focused on ambitious objectives: to put in place a competitive team which can reap the profits of its new boat (CHN95), to be used for the final pre-regatta stage of competition, Louis Vuitton ACT 13, in Valencia April 2007. But also bring an original program, associated with the unique image of the team and their being the first competitors representing China. These concepts are firmly engrained by the graphic design of the boat and the architecture of the base also reinforces the immense interest by the public and media already attributed to the CHINA TEAM. Finally, to raise the interest of our sport, sailing, in China by way of TV retransmission of CHINA Team’s regattas, promotional operations, and sailing events in China.
It is an ambitious program for a team with a modest budget.
But it is an essential starting point for a new team in the quest for the trophy, and draws from the energy, willingness and considerable resources of China.
