United Internet Team Germany rejoins the 33rd America's Cup
United Internet Team Germany has become the fifth official challenge to enter under the Protocol for the 33rd America's Cup.
Accepted at the beginning of September by ACM, the German team becomes the fifth official challenger for the 33rd America’s Cup.
United Internet Team Germany has, contrary to the previous edition, has decided to enter early to establish a strong team. The German challenge hasn’t even waited to know if the America’s Cup Class will still be used the next time in order to build a new boat; which would be number 101 and has already been issued by the chief measurer, Ken McAlpine. GER 101 had been in construction at the boat builders Knierim-Yachtbau in Kiel.
Furthermore, the team has announced that the Polish helmsman previously with Desafio Espanol, Karol Jablonski, has joined them. Karol Jablonski, skipper of Desafio espanol which reached the Louis Vuitton Cup semi finals last May will replace the Danish Jesper Bank, skipper and helmsman of GER 89, who left the team soon after their elimination during the second round-robin of the Louis Vuitton Cup. Winner of the Admiral's Cup 1993 and world champion of the Mumm 18 in 1999, Karol Jablonski is also one of the best specialists in match racing in the world. In 2001, he was ranked as number one in the world and regularly was among the top five.
“Despite the uncertainties surrounding the event, we firmly believe in the route taken by ACM and the Defender Alinghi", declared Michael Scheeren, General Director of UITG. "We want to participate in the battle on the water. It should be the only place the competition should happen."
Following the legal proceedings between Alinghi and Oracle in a New York court, five challengers for the moment have entered in the 33rd edition. The others are waiting some to know a little more! Wait and see …
