A race against the clock
After the events that occurred yesterday, China Team’s technical team began a real sprint to prepare the boat and have it on the starting line for the beginning of Round Robin 2 tomorrow. Emamanuel Alban, structural engineer gave these explanations.
What has happened?
We discovered delamination in the keel blocks, which is integral to the structure. It is without a doubt associated with a previous accident we had on the deck (a month ago) where something broke. We were obliged to check all the blocks and verify the structure. We are in the middle of checking the whole set.
Does this accident surprise you? Could you have detected this a month ago?
Yes, we are surprised, because our structure was reliable at the start. Certainly, we had this accident on the deck, but what happened to us now really was not detectable. No, it is really a blow to us…
Do you think you will be on the starting line for Round Robin 2 tomorrow?
That is our objective! Our structural designer is on hand with a composite expert. These types of repairs take a little bit of time. Nevertheless, we have a day team and a night team to work non-stop 24 hours by 24. It really depends on the results from the precise checks… but I think we can make it. We are going to try to optimize!
