Races on shore
On shore while waiting for the races, life stops. On each base, it is the moment that the whole world waits for, following the race of their team. Once every four years, we have the right “at the office” to watch the television from 14:00 to 17:00, with toes cooling off but the emotion on fire…
Some prefer the quietude of their computer with Virtual Spectator and the data in their hands. We think they are not doing anything, but its not true. They are contemplating, comparing, calculating, and scrutinizing their computer as if the reality was going to jump out of it, living vicariously, but that is okay. It is what we call retroactive work...
Some prefer the VIP China Team tent, empty for a few hours while the VIPs are of course on the water viewing the races. It is the opportunity to tape a discussion between architects, or sailors, who stayed ashore, to share the regatta together without the distraction of seeing their boat. Sometimes, we don’t see the start and well that’s enough to make more than a few upset. Some shout out, commenting on the performance of the team and their competition. Others are laughing but maybe are biting their nails at the same time. Between Chinese and French, we speak sign language interspersed with a few English phrases. We make bets, wait for “the scoop”, and applaud when a small team passes a buoy ahead of a big team.
Some end up sunbathing at the Dragon bar between two buoys… and there are those who prefer the huge screens of the Americas Cup Village. In general, the one facing the base which brings together the teams from Mazcalzone, China Team, and United Internet Team Germany. The colorful teams T-shirts mix in with those of the anonymous crowd. We hear the “oohs” and “aaahhs” between the applauding, along with some ice cream and sitting on giant couches, even if we would like to have a little more comfort,(some cushions!) For those who have accreditation, they are in the Media center to watch the races on Virtual Spectator but also the television and in English,… they have six screens and can follow each match at the same time. It leaves out the spray and rolling of the boats, the seasickness and the sun! They are irreplaceable !
