Luna Rossa will not participate in the 33rd
The Italian syndicate started in 1996 by Patricio Bertarelli, owner of Prada, will not be on the start line for the 33rd America’s Cup.
Luna Rossa, one of the biggest teams of the Cup, present in the competition for some 10 years, having participated in three editions and winner of the Louis Vuitton Cup in 2000, will not participate in the next edition in 2009. The announcement was made on Friday 3rd by Patrizio Bertelli in the Italian news agency Ansa.
“We had ten very intense years” declared the delegated administrator of the Prada group in a press release.
"It was an unforgettable experience but we have decided after three challenges, a cycle had come to an end” explained M. Bertelli.
“The experience was extremely positive both from a sports and human perspective. From a corporate standpoint, participating in these three campaigns has allowed us to acquire and develop precious skills, experience, and visibility for our Group” he indicated.
For the moment, four teams are officially entered: the Spanish from Iberdrola, the Kiwis from Team New Zealand, the South Africans from Shosholoza, and the new English Challenge of Team Origin. Meanwhile, as the battle between Oracle and Alinghi is being fought out in a New York court, the head of the Italian syndicate Mascalzone Latino, Vincenzo Onorato, has not reentered their team, but has made it known on Aug. 3rd, what he has proposed to resolve the conflict. He suggested saving for 2009 the America’s Cup class used for the previous edition and not using the format desired by Alinghi until the following edition. In as much, he asked the Swiss to reopen with the challengers the discussions of the protocol criticizing the overwhelming advantages given to the defender in the new version.
